Lori’s Coffee Tip(s) of the Month

by Lori Watson

June, 1997

  1. Store your coffee beans in an airtight opaque container at room temperature. It is a common miconception that one ought to store them in the freezer. However, this potentially exposes the beans to light, and moisture, which causes spoilage.
  2. There are two kinds of coffee beans – Arabica and Robusta. Arabica are the best beans, because they are grown at a higher altitude on older, more mature trees. The reason that Folgers and other mass-produced coffees don’t taste so great is because they use Robusta beans as filler beans. Most gourmet coffees contain only Arabica beans.
