Rafe Brena

Rafe Brena received his Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence in France (1989). He worked as a researcher at Monterrey Tech (a private university) for over 30 years, leading a research group and serving as head of graduate programs for 10 years. During this time he published books and hundreds of technical articles, earning him recognition as a National Researcher in Mexico. His research consistently led him back to claims with evidence, eventually guiding his personal quest away from religion and toward a naturalistic worldview. One day he realized that he had become a proper atheist and shared his thoughts in the book Becoming an Atheist in One Week. He currently writes a weekly blog post on Medium and a Substack newsletter at the intersection between technology and critical thinking called The Skeptic in the Loop.

One Week to Become an Atheist

In "One Week to Become an Atheist" Rafe Brena condenses the key points of his book Becoming an Atheist in One Week down to a few thousand words. This article's sections (mirroring the book's structure) outline a structured, daily curriculum (from Monday to Sunday) that encourages readers to scrutinize the evolutionary, psychological, and historical origins of religious belief. The essay aims to dismantle common religious assumptions through critical thinking and secular logic, and encourages readers to replace unverified ancient narratives with evidence-based reasoning and personal autonomy. The piece closes by promoting an intellectually mature perspective in which empathy and morality are viewed as innate human traits and cultural values such as freedom rather than rigid moral codes imposed on human beings from above by a divinity.
