Michael Martin received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Harvard University. Beginning in 1975 he held the position of professor of philosophy at Boston University. He is now retired.

In addition to his over one hundred published articles, Martin has written several books including his sweeping Atheism: A Philosophical Justification (1990), The Case Against Christianity (1991), and a collection of short stories: The Big Domino in the Sky and Other Atheistic Tales (1996).

Craig’s Holy Spirit Epistemology

(1998) In Reasonable Faith, William Lane Craig makes a sharp distinction between knowing that God exists and being able to show this. He maintains that one knows that Christianity is true “by the self-authenticating witness of God’s Holy Spirit.”[1] One can show that God exists, that Jesus is his Son, and that other alleged Christian […]

The Jones-Parsons-Martin Debate: Is Non Christian Thought Justifiable?

The "book is a logically deft and clearly written introduction to the philosophy of religion. It should be useful for undergraduate courses, though parts, such as the discussion of the modal ontological argument, are quite complex and certain to confuse beginners. The book is also a brief for atheism. In general, it serves both of its functions well. However, the three parts of the book are unequal in value. I found part 3, in which Le Poidevin examines the possibility of religion without God, to be of less interest than the earlier sections. Further, though I regard part 1, 'The Limits of Theistic Explanation,' as a nearly complete success, I have some reservations about the treatment of the problem of evil in part 2."

How to Educate an Atheist

What is a well-educated atheist? Martin distinguishes between educating someone about atheism and educating him or her to be an atheist. The question of atheistic education, he argues, is not so much how people come to be atheists, but rather what they should learn once they are atheists.
